Colorado to Dyersville, Iowa

Ready to head out on the next leg of our trip... We decided to stay off interstate highways as much as possible in order to see more of the countryside -- so we headed north out of the Denver area to connect with highway 20, the old "Oregon Trail" in Nebraska.
Heading east on Hwy 20 through Nebraska and into Iowa we passed numerous old farmhouses, victims of the consolidation of farmland.
This is the wide open grain belt -- corn, soy beans and hay as far as the eye can see. I really enjoyed the drive through this area with its sparse, but somehow friendly scenery.
Hwy 20 goes through the small towns rather than around them like the interstates, giving us a glimpse of rural life.

It's easy to see which building are the most important structures in the town -- municipal buildings and churches have a grand style of architecture while the houses tend to be quite plain and simple.
The clean lines of elegant simplicity blended with function.
"This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that was once good, and it could be good again. Oh people will come. People will most definitely come."
The field is open daily from April through November, free for all to play on and enjoy -- you are just not allowed to play organized ball here. It is for the public to walk up to, enjoy and play on. And yes, it IS in the middle of a corn field in Iowa.
